چکیده

This study was carried out to see if there are any differences between the prevalence of Kaposi’s sarcoma in HIV infected patients with antibody to Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV8) or not. Methods: The sera of 180 subjects were evaluated for HIV and HHV8 using double ELISA (Genscreen Ultra HIV Ag-Ab ELISA and JN HIV 1/2 ELISA Kit) for HIV screening and advanced Biotechnology Incorporated ELISA for HHV8 IgG antibody detection respectively. Those HIV infected patients that had skin lesions suspected to be Kaposi’s sarcoma were biopsied for histological diagnosis. Results: A total of 180 subjects were recorded for this study. The ratio of male: female was 1:1.02. In all, 100 subjects tested positive to HIV screening and 87 (87%) patients tested positive to HHV8 antibody. Of the 87 patients that were positive to HHV8 antibodies 32 (36.7%) were histologically confirmed to have Kaposi’s sarcoma. Conclusion: We found a high rate of prevalence of Kaposi’s sarcoma KS among HIV infected patients with HHV8 antibodies.

Addressing controversies over Kaposi's sarcoma.

Kaposi’s sarcoma has emerged from being a rarity to being the most important neoplasm in many sub-Saharan countries. Most investigators involved in Kaposi’s sarcoma research now agree that the gammaherpesvirus human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), also called Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is central in the pathogenesis of this disease (1,2). Molecular and seroepidemiologic studies (3,4)...

Kaposi's sarcoma in South Africa.

Kaposi's sarcoma was endemic in South Africa even before the advent of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Between 1988 and 1996, the incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma in South Africa has risen at least threefold and continues to increase as the HIV epidemic grows. Research from South Africa has shown that infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8) is associated with Kaposi's sarcoma but not wit...

Seroprevalence and determinants of human herpes virus 8 infection in adult Nigerians with and without HIV-1 infection.

This study examined the seroprevalence and determinants of HHV8 infections in adult Nigerians with and without HIV-infection. METHODS In 2007, a cross sectional study undertaken in a tertiary hospital in Zaria, northern Nigeria enrolled 71 HIV-1 posi...

Risk of transfusion-associated transmission of human herpesvirus 8.

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8), also known as Kaposi’s sarcoma herpesvirus, causes Kaposi’s sarcoma (1) and is associated with body cavity-based lymphomas and multicentric Castleman’s disease (2,3). HHV8 is spread sexually (4,5), but other routes of transmission probably exist because, in some cases, infection has been shown to be acquired in childhood in HHV8-endemic areas, such as Mediterranean E...
